Elephant is an iPhone application to help you learn via an advanced flashcard system.

We created Elephant to help us learn things. It was designed to be easy to use, simple, and subway-friendly (you can use it with one hand while holding on to the subway pole with the other).

You can use Elephant to learn all kinds of things: foreign language vocabulary, legal terms, SAT words, state capitals. Parents: it works great as a tool to study with your kids! Next time they want to play with your phone, start Elephant and they will learn something while you're waiting in line at the grocery store.

Elephant comes installed with a few decks of cards (French, German, Italian, Spanish, and English numbers and U.S. State Capitals), but it also interfaces with our servers to download other decks of flashcards. Our database of flashcards is growing, so there will always be new decks to learn. And you can create your own decks as well.

The traditional method of going through flash cards is not the ideal way to learn the information. Going through a whole stack of cards multiple times is wasteful as you see the cards you know too often and the cards you don't know too infrequently. Good studiers will start to separate the cards they have learned from the cards they are still working on, but this is imperfect as well as they will often forget a "learned" card after a certain amount of time.

Elephant uses an advanced algorithm to determine what card to show you next. As you learn a card, it shows it to you less frequently. But it is designed to show it to you again just before you will potentially forget it based on scientific analysis of how people memorize information. If you are having trouble remembering a card, you will see it more frequently until you start to get it right.
